Patti Ann Marie Sometimes it just feels good to GIVE...
Recently we've had an opportunity to do a design make-over of the living room for a rape and domestic violence crisis center. We needed to approach everyone we'd be working with and ask them to donate their products or services at reduced rates. In an economic downturn that's a tough request.
But...the executive director of the crisis center told us about her motto, "if you need it, and you believe it, it will come"...and so it did!
The paint and wallpaper was donated FREE OF CHARGE from Goedeke's The painting services were donated FREE OF CHARGE from Painter's Point The wallpaper services were donated FREE OF CHARGE from Ken Hynes The area rug was donated FREE OF CHARGE from Company C The computer was donated FREE OF CHARGE from John F. The faux fireplace was donated FREE OF CHARGE from the Moeckels Upholstery services were given at greatly reduced rates from Lisa Carlson As we come to the final stages of the project we're hoping to provide the center with a flat screen TV and other decorative accessories. Due to the generosity of these amazing businesspeople we are one step closer to being able to complete our design vision.
Our thanks to all involved in this project...you make us feel good! Ann Marie and Patti |

Design Trend: Wallpaper is back... and it's not your mother's wallpaper anymore ! Today's wallpaper, some of it enhanced with things such as glass beads, sand, tiny Swarovski crystals, mirrored tiles and velvety flocking, is making a comeback and is a decorating statement that can add that "wow" factor you may be looking for. Yesterday's traditional damask wallpaper is now oversized in scale and incolors that run from bold and colorful to a subtle "suggestion" of color.
Some wallpaper can be expensive, but used in in small spaces or increative ways; it can be worked into almost any design budget.Powder rooms are a great place to showcase gorgeous wallpaper with out spending a lot of money. Or try using it on just one wall as a focal point and choose a paint color from the wallpaper patter for the other walls. Use it on a fireplace wall with beautiful sconces on either side to reflect and bounce off a shiny pattern. And don't forget a room's fifth wall-the ceiling- as an innovative and unexpected place to add wallpaper-hallways or entryways are great places to implement this idea.
Think of unexpected ways to use wallpaper. Paper the inside of a closet or laundry cupboard to give yourself a treat each time you open the door. Consider using paper on the back wall of bookshelves to add some color or on the door panels of an old cabinet.
Don't be afraid of wallpaper! In small spaces, it's easy to install and, if you prep the walls properly before it goes up, it's easy to remove as well. Just like painting, it's not a lifetime commitment, so have fun with it! ________________________________________________________________________________________

A Member of the Sandwich Generation??...We Need To Talk.
A "family" can now mean 3 or 4 generations living under one roof, and the house under that roof has to provide for all the family needs. This functionality is called "universal design" which means whether you are young, old, tall, short, visually or physically impaired the house is designed to be accessible to all.
Bathrooms and kitchens have historically provided the biggest challenges. Now,in the bath, a customizable shower tower with intuitive controls and 2 adjustable shower heads that slide up for a tall person or down for a child can provide function and style. Wall-mount sinks are current fashion trends, but their practicality allows for legroom for a person in a wheelchair or a child standing on a step-stool. Comfort height toilets are now similar in height to an average dining chair making sitting down and standing up no longer difficult.
Kitchens have shown the greatest advances in using universal design. Adjustable counter-tops allow for varied working areas for the shorter person, for "normal" height and "bar height" for the taller person. Countertops can be made in contrasting colors and surface textures to facilitate the needs of the visually impaired. Or they can have raised edges to prevent spills onto the floor ...and who among us from age 1 to 101 can not appreciate that innovation !?! Cabinetry lines have shelving that slide out when the door is opened providing easier access. A step-stool can conveniently fold away into the toe-kick under the base cabinet allowing for accessibility to upper shelves. Another sensible addition is food pantries that are accessed on one side from the kitchen and on the other side from the garage that can be filled directly from the car after a shopping trip!
Appliances have progressed to address universal design issues. Dishwashers have been raised and microwaves have been lowered. Refrigerators can be under a counter or be side-by-side. Clothes washers and driers are now both front loading... all accomodating the needs of an aging generation, but providing ease of use for all. And this ease of use can translate into dollar values when you go to sell your home. Universal design is basically good design that not just serves the needs of your family, but also meets the needs of the largest market possible, and that ultimately will add to your resale value. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

The Holidays are coming...Is your home "party ready'?
Soon the busiest time of year for entertaining friends and family will be upon us, take a deep breath and think about what you can do now to get your home ready to be the sparkling venue for holiday entertaining you know it can be!
With more companies opting to spend less on holiday parties, many of us are hosting smaller gatherings of business associates at our homes this season, and if this is your year to host a special holiday gathering, it's time to look around your home and make a list of what you would like to repair, replace or spruce up.. well before the invitations are sent out.
If it seems a little early to be thinking about these things, remember that, if replacing a piece of furniture or new window treatments are on your wish list before the holidays, it can take several weeks to get them selected, ordered and delivered and installed.
Here are a few ideas that can give your holiday venue a big impact for little cost or effort:
* Nothing gives your decor an easier or more affordable facelift than paint. Turn a powder room into a jewel box by painting it a rich, deep color. And don't forget the "fifth wall"-the ceiling. Use a paint color with a pearl finish to add shine and bounce light in the small space.
* A colorful area rug can warm up both the look and feel of a room. Add a runner in front of the kitchen sink or a good-sized area rug in your bathroom rather than the customary bath mat. Did you know wool rugs help balance humidity and are naturally soil and water-resistant?
* Recover your dining room chair seats or slipcover your chairs.
* Replace a tired dining room chandelier with an up-dated one. Did you know crystal chandeliers are back? But now, they're mixed with shiny metals and bulbs are topped with round fabric shades. Don't forget to have a dimmer switch installed to take the mood from bright to romantic with the touch of a button.
* Dazzle your guests with a seasonal or theme-based table setting. Create a centerpiece with a mosaic glass candleholder surrounded by mini-pumpkins small gourds and bittersweet vines. Serve a hearty soup or stew in individual ceramic pumpkin soup bowls and apple cider with a cinnamon stick in wine glasses placed on a leaf-shaped plate. Add burgandy, orange or gold place mats and printed napkins and you have a fall-based table setting that will last from early October through Thanksgiving.
