Kitchen Backsplashes-A Combination of Function and Artwork

                       Patti      oct door     Ann Marie
Our "intro" picture at the beginning of this month's newsletter may leave
you  wondering "what are they thinking?"...but for those of us
involved with the Home Builders and Remodelers Association we know
that this is the time of year for the Home Shows. If you are thinking
of doing any home projects at all this year, home shows are a perfect
place to start your research. Internet research is great, but if you need
to "see it and feel it," a home show is for you.

    So, back to the picture...
The NH State Home Show runs from March 5-7 in Manchester,NH at the
Radisson Hotel. They will have exhibitors representing the building
trades, window and door, lighting, security businesses and much more. But,
this year they've added "the softer side". There will be an Avenue of Design.
On the Avenue will be businesses that make the home shine from the
inside out (hence, the picture)...after the builders have worked their magic.
Representative businesses will include carpets, window treatments and
    interior design services.

We'll be there...come say "hello!"  We'll be in Booth 611 in the North
    Convention Hall.

We've also chosen this venue to introduce "Women-focused Design"
to New Hampshire. The following article will give you a sneak- peek
of what we'll be talking about at the Home Show. We hope women,
the decision makers when it comes to home and in-home purchases,
will be as excited as we are about this new emphasis in the interior
    design and construction world!

                           Women-focused Design

Over the last decade women have been petitioning
interior designers, architects and builders to listen
to their evolving needs for their homes.

                           You've got our attention!

We know for a home to function well it's often the
smaller details that women appreciate. We refer to
   these as  "sanity-saving" features.

These features provide you with solutions for your lifestyle in your home:

                  *  good design as well as practicality-
an organized walk-in pantry in the kitchen
                  *  functionality that also meets organizational needs-
                          a mudroom with built-in cubbies for backpacks and shoes ;
electronic docking stations for  cell-phones and i-pods:
                          "drop-zones" for mail and keys
                  *  flexible living solutions that anticipate evolving family demands-
a room that transitions from playroom,
to adult hobby room, to in-law apartment
                  *  an acknowledgement of the areas in the home that function
as stress-free zones , or "entertainment central" or
                      creative workspaces-
a master bedroom and bath that optimizes
escapism from everyday stressors; a great room that
                          serves entertaining and relaxation needs;
a laundry room/ironing area that combines safe
play space while watching over young children
                  *  an understanding for a woman's need to feel secure
                      within her home-
                           providing security system panels
(a combination of security and lighting programs)

  - Women-focused Design understands that women multi-task and helps
them develop the most efficient use of space to accomplish a
    number of these activities.
-Women-focused Design provides women with answers to the
design and organizational dilemmas in their home.
-Women-focused Design appreciates the need to develop areas in the
home to de-stress, to entertain, and to create.
-Women-focused Design offers solutions to lighting and security needs.
-Women-focused Design focuses on the details of "how a home lives."

It's all in the details....your details!

                                            2010 Color Trends

Pantone, Inc., the leading authority on color and provider of professional
color standards for the design industries, has chosen turquoise as the
2010 color of the year. They describe turquoise as an "inviting, luminous
hue...combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects
of green. Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a
languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world,
while at the same time restoring our sense of well-being." Well, okay.
Sign me up! (They obviously spent time in 2009 watching the news
along with the rest of us.)

Though you may not want to paint an entire room turquoise, it might
be fun to try it on an accent wall or in changeable accessories like
pillows or throws. Since turquoise has both warm and cool undertones,
it pairs nicely with popular earth and neutrals, compliments red and
pink and evokes a classic maritime look when paired with deePantone headerp blues.
Expect to see it used with yellow-greens
 this year as well.

Sherwin-Williams color experts suggest bright, energized floral colors for many years. Yellow is in the 2010 color forecast. The new yellow will take on shades of green and move away from the sage greens that have
been popular for many years. Shades of purple, especially lavender, will
also be popular, especially in the bedroom where it portrays luxury and
   elegance.

Here are a few more trends predicted by color experts for 2010:

    * The hot new neutrals are slate and charcoal gray replacing
       browns and beige.
    * Expect blue to make a comeback, especially icy blue and blues
       mixed with gray.
    * Reds will be strong... a clean "pop" to go with neutrals.
    * Orange moves away from earth-based colors to an "optimistic" orange,
seasoned with a touch of gray.

Kitchen Backsplashes -Function and Artwork Combined!

Looking for a visual punch to brighten up your kitchen? Or something
to tie together discordant elements, like warm wood cabinets and
cold stainless steel appliances? What can accomplish these things?
    ...a kitchen backsplash.

Stone, glass, metal, porcelain, terracotta, wood, mosaics and eco-friendly
tiles made from recycled glass, aluminum and brass are all materials
we are seeing alone and in interesting combinations in kitchen
backsplashes these days. Backsplashes are considered wall art
in kitchen design, and we are seeing more interesting tile designs
    than ever.

Here are a few ideas for creative and functional backsplashes.

We helped Pinnacle Kitchens in New Hampton, NH, dress up
this display kitchen. The backsplash is done in a small brick-
patterned stone in varying shades of gray and terracotta. Notice how
the terracotta incorporates the warm tones of the teak countertop
and the gray ties in the    stainless steel sink and appliances. The
grout is the color of the cabinets. The color combination is further
enhanced by the two-toned cabinet colors in cream and dark gray
set off by the cozy terracotta on the walls. The tile in this kitchen
extends up to the shelf over the sink making an eye-catching focal point.

In another kitchen display, we added a backsplash done in 2"
glass tiles with a matt finish. The tiles were very affordable and come
in many colors in both matt and glossy finishes. Try combining matt
and glossy tiles together in colors that you already have in your
kitchen or you would like to have in your kitchen. We used a
colorful area rug for our inspiration in the display and chose tiles
in red, black, orange and sage green in a random pattern mixed
with cream tiles, the color of the countertop. The tiles came mounted
    on 12 x 12 mesh-backed sheets for easy installation.

A budget-conscious idea was used in a kitchen to pair inexpensive
4 x 4 tiles with more expensive diamond-patterned tiles using only
a running strip in the center of the backsplash. Although the
homeowner fell in love with the diamond-patterned tile, the cost
of using it on the entire backsplash was  prohibitive.
However, using a small amount of it fit nicely within her budget and the
diamond-shaped tiles stand out even more when centered within the
    square tiles.
There are so many tile options available today that backsplash ideas
are endless! A little imagination and creativity can create functional
and inspiring wall art for your kitchen.
